Welcome one and all to the new lj.gl, I say new because I've finally switched off the redirect to mmn.on.ca.
You'll probably notice from my posts that it's been a while since I last updated, since bringing the site over to Hugo I've not been really too happy with it since it takes forever to generate, but also Hugo is a bit flashy and I really just want something more clean and basic to run off of.
Since I've been avoiding public spaces (*hem* pandemic) I've been trying to wrap some of that energy in to something that isn't watching Netflix 24/7 and eating another 20kg closer to a non-COVID death. So far so good, I got up two self hosted mail servers, a new Gopher server, and a Gemini Server. How good of me to do this.
I've also been respiring the joy that is ec.je, I've bought a few domains since and I'm really not feeling the empty void they're totally not filling, so we travel back to 2017 when my keen ass had so many bright ideas. In the new form of ideas, I decided that since I have **a lot** of hosted space, that I would use this to an advantage. That advantage you ask, well, making ec.je more redundant.
There are a total of 5 servers that the site lives on in Germany, Sweden, Norway, the UK and the US. Some of these places are slightly better to be hosted in, and the other two are somewhat questionable due to their government's concept of invading privacy. I'll leave you to guess where those two are.
The idea I want to try and play out is redirecting traffic to the closest server, since some of the packages are slightly more forgiving than others in terms of data, plus it'd actually just be cool to give that a try.
With a little bit of bash scripting, site copy, and a lot of hope I managed to keep a central (or master) copy on one of my servers here I can access remotely, and then it'll happily splash the files upwards to the various servers.
You might have noticed that the domain lj.gl now directs to the site *no.ec.je/journal*, while it's totally true that a copy of */journal/* is available on all the mirrors, for writing just total crap online I'd rather use the Norwegian server to highlight it. Mainly because it's low volume static text files, but also Norway is pretty solid on privacy and freedoms, so I'm less worried about a malicious complaint trying to take something I wrote down because they don't like it much.
The next step is trying to figure out how I get the old LiveJournal archive back up here, there is somebody who's actually figured out the movement from Hugo on the Logarion mailing list, so I should probably ask the how sooner rather than later.
Until then I'll leave everything up at mmn.on.ca.
